Changing the World with a Brush
Calligraphy, which has known as a type of traditional arts, is reinventing itself with its innate vitality and dynamism in the larger framework of modern design. The new calligraphy can be seen as a combination of a semantic and communication tool with the aesthetic beauty of letters them selves. In terms of fine arts, penmanship refers to beautiful and different letter forms, not the mechanical and identical expression: flexible and free-stretching lines; unique spread of each letter; beauty of balance seen in the blanks, etc. Points and lines come together to form strokes, which in turn create the unique balance between rhythms and rules.

Calligraphist Lee Sang-hyun is often dubbed Actor with a Writing Brush or Pioneer of Korean Calligraphy, who adds expressions and sensitivity to Korean alphabet. He has highly contributed to the popularization of traditional calligraphy via brisk artistic activities at home and abroad. His performances have focused on grafting modern dance, jazz, indie music and other modern art genres with calligraphy.

전통예술로 알려져 왔던 ‘서예’가 그 속에 담겨진 생명력과 원동력으로 현대디자인이라는 커다란 울타리 속에서 캘리그라피(Calligraphy)라는 이름으로 다시 태어나 새 영역을 표현하고 있다. 의미전달의 수단인 문자의 본뜻에 글자 자체의 순수한 조형미를 더한 것이 바로 캘리그라피라는 것이다. 유연하고 자유분방한 선, 글자 자체의 독특한 번짐 효과, 여백의 균형미등 순수 조형의 관점에서 보는 서체예술은 통상 기계적인 표현이 아닌 손으로 쓴 아름답고 개성 있는 글자체를 지칭한다. 점과 선이 모여 하나의 획이 되고 그 획이 운율과 규칙의 조화를 이룬 서체. 그 독특한 세계라 말하고 싶다.

한글에 표정을 만들고 감성이라는 옷을 입히기 위해 붓을 잡은 연기자 그리고 ‘한국캘리그라피 시장의 개척자’라는 이름으로 알려져 있으며, 국내외적으로 수많은 작품활동을 통해 전통서예를 대중예술로 승화시키고자 한다. 주로 현대무용, 째즈, 인디음악과 같은 현대예술장르와 캘리그라피 문화를 접목시키는 퍼포먼스 공연을 통해 글씨에 마음을 담고자 한다.
